Nowadays, we witness ‘the visual turn’: Pictures, images, videos, films, infographics, and artwork are more popular than ever. Similarly, companies producing userfriendly visuals from Pixar to Apple, Netflix to Instagram are more profitable than ever. We live in a golden age of visualization, design, and creativity.
In our times, being a young person is pretty scary. There is information overload, accompanied by constant anxiety and stress about an unknown future. There is no job security. We face constant shifts and economic turbulence, along with a perfect storm of technology. There are even signs that Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror dystopia is turning into a reality. We do not know about tomorrow’s jobs, workplaces, and organizations. The only thing we can be sure about is the necessity of selfmaking: We have to constantly learn, be open to change, and disrupt ourselves. We also need to find our own strengths, meanings, and voice in the middle of all the chaos and noise surrounding us. This toolkit is intended to help you make some progress towards this goal.
I reduce my own anxiety through doodling and diary keeping. I wanted to share my methods with my students and young people out there. The journey of selfmaking is difficult and complex. I tried to make this journey easier, more engaging and memorable using visual tools and doodles. I hope you take the ride with me and enjoy this learning journey.
